The Evil Within PC Issues, Random Crashes, Launch Problem and other Fixes

The Evil Within is out for PC alongside other platforms. The PC version encountering many major issues including Black Bars, Wont Launch, FPS Stuttering, Random Crashes and others. Here are the issues addressed with their solutions.

The Evil Within System Requirements

Minimum:

  • OS: Windows 7 SP1/Windows 8.1
  • Processor: i7 or an equivalent with four plus core processor
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • Graphics: GTX 460 or equivalent 1 GB VRAM card
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Hard Drive: 50 GB available space

Recommended:

  • Processor: i7 with four plus cores
  • Graphics: GeForce GTX 670 or equivalent with 4GBs of VRAM

The Evil Within – Game Crashes Randomly or after Loading

It is a much known issue, the game crashes randomly anywhere or after loading. Here are some possible workarounds, try them, hoping it works.

  • First of all, verify the game files from Steam.
  • If you are NVidia user, open NVidia Control Panel, click Manage 3D Settings and then click the Restore Button with the green NVidia logo next to it.

The Evil Within – How to Skip Intro Videos

To skip the introduction/startup videos, right click the game in the Steam, Properties, click Set Launch Options and add +com_skipIntroVideo 1, now save.

The Evil Within – How to Enable Console

As above, right click the game in Steam, Properties, and click Set Launch Options now add +com_allowconsole 1, click OK. Press the Insert key to open the console in-game.

The Evil Within – How to Set Aspect Ratio in Console

First of all, enable console as above, in-game, open the console by pressing Insert key, now enter R_forceaspectratio followed by an aspect ratio value, and remember all widescreen resolutions are letterboxed 2.35:1 by default. Default is 2.5; 0 is full screen but developer recommends 1.8 or 2.

The Evil Within – Set FPS Cap

Enter the R_swapinterval -1 for a 60 FPS cap or R_swapinterval 0 for remove the FPS cap.

The Evil Within – Useful Console Commands

Here are the some very useful console commands:

  1. R_swapinterval <NUMBER> (You can set the values to change the FPS cap, -2 for 30 FPS, -1 for 60 FPS limit and 0 for remove FPS cap)
  2. God (God mode. You are effectively invincible, and certain enemy kill moves will not be used against you)
  3. Noclip (Allows you to walk through walls)
  4. G_infiniteammo (Unlimited ammo (provided you have at least 1 bullet when you enable this)
  5. G_stoptime 1 (Stops time. Note there is a bug right now where using this command causes a UI element to appear on screen. We’re looking to fix that in the near future. Re enable time with g_stoptime 0)
  6. Toggledebugcamera (Separates the camera from Sebastian so you can freely move around the)
  7. R_forceaspectratio <NUMBER> (Sets the aspect ratio. Default is 2.5, which is our official aspect ratio. 0 is full screen, but not ideal. 1.8 or 2 is probably most comfortable for those who don’t want bars)
  8. Com_showFPS (Turns on id’s native FPS counter)
  9. Startslowmotion2 (Slows down time)
  10. Stopslowmotion (Disables slow motion)

The Evil Within – Black Bars Issue

The black bars issue is being resolved by changing the Aspect Ratio, use the above console commands and apply the different values to fix this problem.

The Evil Within – Game isn’t Launching

If you are trying to launch the game and nothing happen, then make sure you have installed all redistributables from game installation folder. If yes then try the DEP (Data Execution Prevention) to fix this issue. Go to Control Panel, System and Security, System, Advance System Settings, Advance tab, and now select the Performance settings. Here hit the Data Execution Prevention tab and add the game’s exe.
